I think, everybody will have this question, after 2014 April 8, because, microsoft will leave windows xp without new updates, so you'll be able remove it from your personal computer or stay with old system just. Somebody will install Windows 7/8, if their computers will be able to run this os, but what will they do if their computers haven't enough resources to run Windows 7/8?
Hm, i think you have, two ways.
The first way, you could try insert more memory, a faster cpu, or the graphic card with better resources. Of course for you'll need some or not so little money. If you don't want waste your cash, i think second way would be better for you.
So the second way would be just get operation system, with less hardware requirements than Windows Vista/7/8. Of course better would be free operating system for you, but is it possible get free operating system, and legally?

The most GNU/Linux operating systems are free, stable, also secure, and easy to use, you can get support from another users, or developers, and also if you don't understand something, or you can't connect to the internet, change keyboard layout, find and install new pragram or something you did wrong. Best way, to get support is IRC channel, and of course you can find a lot of information in the internet, with any search engine.
Not only GNU/Linux is free operating system, but another free os'es have a lower hardware support, and a little more difficult to use its too. I don't want talk about these operating systems, because you need good to know GNU/Linux if you're dreaming about using of another free operating systems. So my recommendation would be GNU/Linux.
